Books, Articles and more.

Here is a selection of some of my favourite music related literature, articles and music shops. I always find it interesting to read literature with a music theme, both fiction and non-fiction. I have also included a few websites of the music shops I use to buy equipment and sheet music.

Literature: Fiction

A really unusual book about how a piano repair shop hidden away in Paris reawakens an American man’s love of music.

A delightful, easy read, set in 1988 about the owner of a record shop. This will inspire you to listen to all genres of music!

An uplifting novel about how the hypnotic sound of a piano being tuned caused a young man to embark on a career of piano tuning and find his calling.

Set in Switzerland during the Second World War, this book tells the story of the friendship between two young boys, one of whom is a gifted pianist.

Literature: Non-Fiction

An intriguing book describing how pianos have made their way into homes across Siberia, surviving throughout generations in a hostile landscape.

Sometimes, we have to find the right ‘fit’ of instrument for children. This is a fascinating book about how we might discern what that is. I really recommend this for doing just that!

Similarly, this book also helps to ascertain which instrument we might be best suited too. Don’t be fooled by the title – I think this is just as useful for adults as children!

A wonderful book to dip in and out of, filled with fascinating classical music facts and stories, alongside a suggested piece to listen to every day of the year.

Using musical examples from Bach to the Beatles, the role of music in human evolution is revealed, showing how our musical preferences begin to form even before we are born.

This is an excellent read for anyone beginning to delve into the world of classical music.
